There are few questions that should be asked when shopping for an all in one inkjet printer:

• What type of printing is it going to be mainly used for?
• What volume of printing is going to be carried out each month?
• Is the printer going to be used by multiple people?
• How much are you willing to spend?

Answering these questions will help you to narrow down your choice only to printers which will meet your demands.

Inkjet printers transfer ink drops from cartridges to create an image or text. The main advantage of inkjet printing technology is the quality of printed photos and colours in general. If you need to print materials which are colour-rich and wish to get the best results - using an inkjet printer will be a smart choice regarding cost and print quality. Laser printers that would be capable of delivering similar colour print quality are usually found in high end models which cost multiple times more than even the highest inkjet models.

If you know more or less how much you are going to print monthly it might give you a fair idea about the cost of printing. The main costs for inkjet printing is paper and ink all in one inkjet printers are quite versatile in terms of media that they can print on so you don’t need to worry that the cost is going to be higher on this as you can use basic multifunction paper. Inkjet cartridges can be quite expensive to buy but you can also reduce their cost. First of all you should check the prices of cartridges and their page yield for a particular type of printer that you are considering to buy. By dividing the price of ink by the page yield you will quickly see the cost of printing one page. Most of inks are available in “high yield” version which usually drives the cost of printing down. You might also consider buying compatible inks – they are significantly cheaper and deliver great quality. Compatible inks are safe to use and come with a guarantee covering the ink cartridge itself as well as the printer that it is used with. Something worth remembering is that individual ink cartridges for each colour tend to be cheaper to run as you only have to replace the colour that is gone; if the printer uses a tri colour ink cartridge you don’t have that option and even if only one colour might be gone you still need to replace the full cartridge.

If you need to your printer to be used by multiple users you have to check that the printer is either network ready or wireless. In most of cases it is easy to recognize as the printer model is usually followed by “N” which stands for network or ”W” which stands for wireless. If a printer is network ready you can connect it to a number of computers using a network cable. If you are using computers with wireless connection you might choose to get a wireless printer as it will reduce the amount of cabling in the office and also cut the cost on network cables.

Basic all in one printers can be found for around €50 and the high spec models can reach up to €400 so it is really worth establishing what budget are you willing to spend on a printer. Obviously the cheaper printers are suitable for home/home office as their monthly page cycle would be low and cost per page higher. Higher spec models apart from being able to print more pages per month also offer a lot of useful features such as automatic document feeder or automatic double sided printing.

All in one inkjet printers vocabulary

• All in one – this stands for available functions which are print, copy, scan in practically any multifunction printer and some models also offer fax function

• ADF – automatic document feeder allows you to stack multiple pages in the printer so that you can print larger volumes without the need of manually inserting each page into the printer

• Duplex – this stands for double sided printing which is extremely convenient and money-saving as you use less paper; a lot of printers are marked as duplex but make sure that this is an automatic duplex so that the printer turns the pages itself

• Airprint, Google Cloud Print – these services which are becoming more and more present in most of modern printers allow you printing from devices such as smartphones, tablets and other devices without the need of installing drivers. Such printing usually uses a Wi-fi or Bluetooth connection to send the job to the printer.
