In comparison - the 4:3 aspect ratio is an older format, often used in old, analogue TV's. It's a more "square" shaped format which gives newer media a feeling of being cropped, while 16:9 is a widescreen but on older media it results in black bars manifesting on the top and bottom of the screen. .
