With a huge variety of available cash registers you might find it hard to choose a model that will suit your needs and requirements. It is important to choose the right cash register as you don’t want to overspend for getting features that you don’t need or to spend very little but not get all the necessary features. To help you with choosing the right cash register we have prepared this buyers guide which will give you an overview of what is important when choosing a cash register.

• The first thing you need to establish is the amount of products or services that you need to program the cash register with – the basic cash registers allow adding between 80-200 items (they are referred to as PLU – Product Look Ups) which is suitable for small shops or pop up stands. More advanced models give you the option to add thousands of items (2,000-10,000) and can be used in larger retail shops which don’t require networked cash registers.

• Another thing that is worth looking at is the amount of groups/departments to which you can assign your products to so that it is easy to track the sales and performance of particular groups of items. Again the basic cash registers have 8-20 departments available while higher spec registers can have 99-200 groups assigned.

• Cashier feature – this means you can set up different users and you will be able to get custom reports for sales made by a particular user which is a handy way of checking the performance of an employee. Basic cash registers do not have such feature but in cases where there are only 2-3 people operating the till there is no need for it. If you have multiple employees using the cash register it is definitely worth having – cash registers which have cashier function allow adding between 8-25 different users. When having multiple users it might be worth getting extra cash drawers which can be used by particular operators.

• Most of entry and medium level cash registers have a single printer which prints the receipts for customers and stores all the transactions and operations in its memory which can be then printed using end of day reports or custom reports. A lot of modern cash registers also use an SD memory card which stores all the information and can be used with a computer in order to put the figures on a spread sheet or print a report. In terms of printing it might be worth getting a cash register that will allow you to insert your company’s name or logo on each receipt which is a very common feature (apart from the very basic cash registers).

• Tax rates – this is a standard feature even in the basic cash registers and most of machines allow you to set up at least four different tax rates depending on your needs.

• Display – entry level models are fitted with digit only operator display while higher models also come with a customer display. More advanced cash registers have multiple lines operator displays which are capable of displaying text such as product names; customer displays in these models are still digit only ones.

• Keyboard – a standard for cash register keyboards is 30-60 raised buttons which incorporate various function keys as well as digit keys. For places like pubs and restaurants you might look for a cash register which comes with flat keys that are resistant to spillages and also have significantly more keys to which individual products can be assigned for ease of use.

Casio Cash Register SE-G1SD-BK Black
Really compact and has loads of added bonuses
"I inherited my cash register from the previous shop owner and I felt that it was time to invest in a new more modern one. The old cash register was a casio so I went straight for the casio 140cr cash register. It is really compact and has loads of added bonuses. It is light weight so it is really easily removed at night. It has a little slot on the drawer for dispensing notes quickly and it is a lovely little machine. I just hope that this casio 140cr cash register will last as long as the old one."

It does exactly what its supposed to do
"I must say here that I did not buy this casio 140cr cash register myself. I got it as a present from my family when I opened my new shop in Shannon. I was just delighted with it and that is why I am on the website reviewing my casio 140cr cash register. It is black in colour, and very compact It does exactly what its supposed to do and I love it. It has a secure registration control, a drop in note slot and it can also serve as a calculator. Could not fault it."
