What is a defibrillator?

A defibrillator is a small, portable electronic device that analyses the heart rhythm of a person who has experienced a cardiac arrest and delivers an electric shock through the chest wall if it detects a rhythm that can respond to defibrillation. The electrical current momentarily stuns the heart, stopping the abnormal rhythm and helping the heart resume normal electrical activity.

What is an AED defibrillator ?

An AED defibrillator is an Automated External Defibrillator combined with the administration of lifesaving CPR, is the only form of treatment for someone who has suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Having an AED on site means you are as prepared as possible to help save a life!
With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs defibrillators are designed to be simple to use for the layperson, and the use of AEDs defibrillators is taught in many first aid, certified first responder, and basic life support level cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR classes.

Semi automatic AEDs defibrillators or fully automatic AEDs defibrillators which one should I pick?

This functionality is closely related to ease of use, one of the most important considerations. All AEDs defibrillators do provide clear instructions throughout the rescue process. However, the rescue attempt can be a stressful process, especially for a novice. They are available in two types of energy delivery configurations: semi automatic AEDs, where the AED will verbally request the rescuer to push the shock button to deliver the treatment. Whle fully automatic AEDs defibrillators which have no shock button to push and will deliver the shock automatically.

All AED defibrillators models are available in semi automatic configuration, some defibrillators models are available in fully automatic configuration.
Whether the AED defibrillator is semi automatic or fully automatic, all AEDs will analyze the victim’s heart rhythm and determine whether a shock is required.
All defibrillators come with an IP rating which indicates how well protected they are against dust particles and how water resistant they are. Some defibrillators are basic and easy to use, others Defibrillators have added functions like ECG monitors and CPR Advisors.
For protection to the patient, all defibrillators come equipped with a safeguard which means that once the electrode pads are attached and the device has monitored the patient’s heart rate, if they do not need electro shock therapy, the defibrillator will not allow it to be administered.
