Metal bookends are a simple way of organising books in an upright position on flat borderless surfaces such as shelves, desks or cupboard tops. There are numerous designs and styles in which bookends are available but the most popular and practical bookends are made of strong metal, which is capable of withstanding even the most significant weight of large and heavy books. All bookends operate in exactly the same way no matter what the design is – with 2 perpendicular surfaces, the base one being held by the weight of the books, creating sort of an anchor which keeps all the books in place. 

You can use metal bookends in two ways, depending on the type of furniture you are storing your books in. If you want to keep few titles on your desk without getting any additional shelving or you want to prevent books from falling on a shelf without walls, you can simply use 2 bookends which you place at both sides of the books placed in a row (this is why bookends usually are sold in pairs). You can also use single bookends to give support to books which are kept on a shelf with sides but which don’t fill up the whole shelf space.

	"I can't believe I never thought of getting book ends before! I have quite a large selection of heavy encyclopaedias that I've been stacking on top of each other because they won't stay put on my shelves. It finally dawned on me ... book ends! Had a look in a local shopping centre with no joy so had a search online and found these Metal book ends from 5 Star on huntoffice.co.uk. Didn't realise they would be so cheap especially for heavy duty ones! On arrival I was impressed at how sturdy they were. I only ordered the pack of 2 180mm ones to start off to test them out to see if they would be strong and heavy duty enough to hold my heavy books. I have my heavy books placed on a shelf that's running up to a corner so for those I use the 2 on the same end and they hold them perfectly without the books slipping off. As well as being heavy duty they're nice and thin so you would barely notice that they are there and the black colour goes well with my interior. Since then I've ordered another 2 sets, one for my lighter books and another for my DVD's. 	"These book ends work really great with even the thickest and heavy books. I always was worried if one day the brick like dictionaries that were sitting above my head on an open shelf are just going to fall on me. I know it might sound funny but I was actually very concerned as a 600 pages book that could be knocked down and hit your head or palm is a potential source of a serious injury.
