Safety Eyewear Certification EN 166
EN 166 is the European certification for personal eye protection.
It is the core technical industrial safety norm in Ireland & the rest of Europe for eye protection.
It applies to all types of individual protection of the eye which protects from hazards likely to damage the eye, except for nuclear radiation, x-rays, laser emissions and infrared emitted by low temperature sources.
EN 166 is the minimum required certification regarding eyewear in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
There are different types but the most important ones are:
EN.166S (Safety glasses):
Frame and lens must withstand the impact of a 22 mm steel ball weighing 43 grams dropped from 1,3 meters at a speed of 18 km/h. The lens must remain in the frame and is not to shatter. The frame must remain intact as well.
N.166F (Safety glasses):
Frame and lens must withstand the impact of a 6 mm steel ball weighing 0,86 gram fired at 162 km/h. The lens must remain in the frame and is not to shatter. The frame must remain intact as well.

EN.166B (Safety goggles):
Frame and lens must withstand the impact of a 6 mm steel ball weighing 0,86 gram fired at 432 km/h. The lens must remain in the frame and is not to shatter. The frame must remain intact as well.

Safety Glasses Lens Options

Clear Lens Safety Glasses:
Can be used for indoor and outdoor environments in normal lighting conditions. |

Grey / Smoke Lens Safety Glasses:
Helps reduce glare in bright lighting conditions. Generally for use outdoors in the sun to reduce eyestrain and fatigue. |

Dark Grey Lens Safety Glasses:
Helps reduce glare in bright lighting conditions. Generally for use outdoors in the sun to reduce eye strain and fatigue. |

Amber / Yellow Lens Safety Glasses:
Helps enhance visual contrast in low lighting conditions. Good for conditions where only ambient light is present such as early morning, late day, overcast, foggy, and inclement weather conditions like rain or snow. |

Blue Lens Safety Glasses:
Clear blue mirror coating over a very light grey tinted lens can be worn indoors or outdoors. Great for changing lighting conditions, and also for driving at night. |

Fit is very important - If you will be wearing the safety glasses over-top of prescription lenses or reading glasses, make sure they they are large enough to fit.
